Gregg Araki doesn't make simple movies. They're usually trippy, sexy, homoerotic, surreal and have TONS of nudity. Kaboom follows in the same vein as The Doom Generation or Nowhere but has a decidedly sci-fi feel to it. IF you like Gregg Araki, you're going to like this movie without a doubt. If you're a nudophile, you're going to LOVE this movie thanks to skinful appearances by Juno Temple, Haley Bennett, Roxane Mesquida, Nicole LaLiberte, Ann Magnuson and Kelly Lynch. It is an eyeful.

More a light drama than a comedy, this 2002 French film by director Catherine Breillat doesn't come close to some of her other works, nor is it as erotic, but on it's own, it is a decent if not great effort.

A director (played by Anne Parillaud) struggles to film a difficult intimate nude scene between two of her actors. Although both profess willingness to do the scene, they both have one problem. They hate each other.

Roxane Mesquida (who actually seems to have no problem doing nude scenes, judging by her other pictures) does a good job as the reluctant actress who can't stand her partner. Gregoire Colin plays the actor who can barely stand to kiss the girl, and is an egotistical jerk as well.

One gets the impression Breillat did this movie as much for herself as anyone, and it could well reflect some of the problems she's had, given that much of her work contains nudity and eroticism. Low key and sometimes slow to the point of being boring, but still some interesting parts.

I admire movies that try to be realistic and bring out the sordid side of people, and I also admire directors who, in this politically correct world, aren't afraid of being provocative and even controversial. Even so, this 2001 French drama, especially at the end, is nothing but a gigantic punch in the gut, leaving you with nothing but a feeling of hopelessness and despair. It's directed by Catherine Breillat, who also did Romance, another provocative and controversial French film.

A 12 year old, having fought being overweight all her life, must also fight the sibling competition of her beautiful 15 year old sister (played by then 20 year old Roxane Mesquida). The sister is a flirt, and becomes involved with an older boy intent on taking her virginity. As he makes nightly visits to the bedroom the sisters share, the 12 year old must endure the sounds of sexual advances as she pretends to be asleep.

The film raised a lot of controversy at the time because of some fairly explicit scenes, but perhaps most shocking is the ending, completely unexpected and producing a major tragedy. While I'm not sorry I watched this film, I can't say I liked it, because basically this film serves up everything not to like.
