Nude Celebs: Kelly Rowan - It’s rather surprising to see that Bill Condon is the director of this sequel to 1992’s urban legend fairy tale Candyman. But everyone has to get a start somewhere, and here the Academy Award winning writer of Gods and Monsters (and director of the Academy Award nominated Kinsey), gets his early-career horror pin-stripes by helming this slasher-pic/gothic romance based on a character created by horror icon Clive Barker.
In it, we find Annie (Kelly Rowan), a happily married elementary school teacher living in New Orleans whose life is shattered by the murder of her father during Mardi Gras festivities. What’s worse, her btother is accused of the murder, but Annie knows he is innocent and that her father’s murderer was none other than the legendary hook-handed killer written about in her father’s recent book. Summoning the Candyman herself, Annie’s life becomes a nightmare as those around her become his target, but what is Annie's true tie to the killer. The answer is rather surprising!
Despite Condon’s best efforts, this sequel fails to measure up to the intensity of the original, and the atmospheric sense of dread filling the ghetto of the first movie is lost by the colorful New Orleans setting. Rowan does a fine job as the tormented heroine, as does Tony Todd as the title character, but the pacing seems off and the intermittent bursts of rather explicit gore seem out of place in what is more a psychological horror story. The movie does earn points, however, for its delving deeper into the Candyman mythology, more clearly illustrating in chilling flashbacks the origins of the murderous ghost.
