Writer John Irving's adaptation of his novel set in '40s New England earned him an Academy Award. Young Tobey Maguire leaves the only home he's known, a Maine orphanage run by physician mentor Michael Caine (who took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar), to find his place in the world.
