PURCHASE THE DVD: Crocodile Dundee (1986)

Ostensibly the reason that America fell in love with Australian culture, there’s a lot of things that’d be different nowadays if it weren’t for Crocodile Dundee. Would there be Outback Steak Houses? Would we all know what’s “Austrailian for beer?” Is it possible there’d never have been a career for Steve Irwin? All are most assuredly due to the folksy and charismatic portrayal of Aussie hunter Mick Dundee by excellent Paul Hogan, who for a time was the face for the tourism bureau of Australia inviting Americans to “slip another shrimp on the barbie.”

It’s lingo such as this, combined with a likeable rough-and-tumble exterior and a clever screenplay that is essentially two fish-out-of-water stories, that made Crocodile Dundee not only an 80’s phenomenon, but also a movie audiences can still appreciate today. A simple, old-fashioned tale of a blossoming love affair between Mick Dundee, an Aussie bushman who supposedly fought off a crocodile attack, and Sue Charlton, a New York City reporter, (played by the fetching Linda Kozlowski) the movie draws upon the characters’ strengths in their respective settings to provide some nice laughs when both are displaced into the other’s environment.

If you haven’t seen it in a while, do be sure to consider it the next time your looking for something innocuous and fun to kill a couple of hours.
