PURCHASE THE DVD: Doctor Who (2005) (2005)

The BBC finally brought back this long running series in 2005, after a 16 year absence, but it was well worth the wait. The central premise remains the same, Time Lord travels the universe in a ship that looks like a London 60's era Police Box), but just about everything else is different. Gone are the cheap effects and trash bag monsters, the gonzo tone and the insular stories. The tone of the new series is darker and much more series. It's like trying to compare Star Trek: TNG to Star Trek:TOS, you really just can't. The Doctor himself does remain a compelling, quirky character however. Series One of the revival found Christopher Eccelston taking on the role of The Ninth Doctor, giving him a mercurial, almost manic tone. Eccelston remained for only a year and in Series Two David Tennant took the role and has proved to be just as compelling, but more well-rounded. The finale of Series Two had one of the best, most emotional scenes in the series' history and Series Three just completed airing in the UK.
