PURCHASE THE DVD: Fighting Tommy Riley (2005)

Former boxer and washed-up trainer Marty Goldberg (Eddie Jones) could get one last hurrah in the form of a raw young fighter (played by screenwriter J.P. Davis) who displays championship potential. But the novice pugilist also has a self-destructive streak and a troubled past that could sink his fledgling career. Each encumbered by heavy emotional burdens, Marty and his protégé must learn trust and the value of partnership to prevail in the ring.

This is a beautifully written, thoughtfully acted boxing film very, very far from the Rocky cliché. If that’s the kind of boxing film you enjoy, you probably should give this one a pass. However, if you want to see a tasteful and original film about conceivably real people caught up in a situation that surely must have occurred more than once in real life, this is the film for you.
