PURCHASE THE DVD: G.I. Jane (1997)
For many, G.I. Jane is memorable but for only the buzzed-to-the-scalp haircut sported by Demi Moore for the second half of the movie. That’s a shame, because this woman-against-the-odds-themed drama has a lot going for it, including excellent performances from close-cropped (and totally buff) Moore and jarhead Viggo Mortensen as her ball-busting C.O.
Moore plays Lt. Jordan O’Neil, a naval officer who wants to train with the very best for a prestigious (and rather dangerous) position on a Special Ops Naval Seal team (the Combined Reconnaissance Team.) She’s given the chance by a female senator, and thus becomes the first woman to ever train as a potential CRT. The training, however, is Hell on Earth and with the added baggage of being a woman strapped to her back, every hill she has to climb, mile she has to run and one-handed push-up she has to perform is made that much more difficult.
Often exciting and energizing, G.I. Jane may be pure Hollywood filmmaking at its most predictable, but it delves into thought-provoking gray areas involving sexism. Is it always true that a woman is equal to a man? This movie crafts several situations that may give pause to even the most avid feminist.
