PURCHASE THE DVD: Girl 6 (1996)

A largely forgotten, but rather entertaining and thought-provoking “Spike Lee Joint,” Girl 6 takes the viewer inside the inner workings of a phone sex company as it follows the rough-road traveled by a wannabe actress who can’t seem to get her career started the way she wants it to be started. When she starts to speak with her callers off hours, even taking a chance to meet one in person, a much darker undertone that permeates the entire movie begins to consume it entirely.

An unconventional thriller that features a host of celebrity cameos and “before they were stars” turns, the movie is anchored well by the excellent Theresa Randle as “Judy,” the young aspiring actress who becomes “Girl 6” at the phone sex company in order to pay her bills. Be sure to watch for Naomi Campbell, Debi Mazar, and Gretchen Mol as Judy’s co-workers, and the wonderful Michael Imperioli of The Sopranos who terrifies as Caller #30.
