Nude Celebs: Erika Blanc - Legendary Italian horror maestro Mario Bava helmed this classic Gothic mystery that finds a medical examiner visiting a village that’s either caught up in hysteria or haunted by the death of a young girl. Originally titled Operazione Paura or Operation Fear, Kill Baby Kill is a stylish gem of a movie that purportedly influenced at least one sequence in Martin Scorcese’s The Last Temptation of Christ.
Paul Eswai is swell-suited for the role of the young medical examiner sent to town to examine the body of a young woman who apparently died by her own hand. Soon he, and hi assistant/love interest Erika Blanc uncover the story of Melissa, a seven year-old girl who died in a tragic accident, a death that may be connected to a rash of apparent suicides that have plagued the fog-ridden hamlet. Many believe it is the ghost of Melissa forcing villagers into rather gory ends, but a very real suspect is Melissa’s mysterious mother, the Baroness Graps holed-up in the huge, scary mansion at the end of town.
A combination of the best of Euro horror with the best of the Hammer films, Kill Baby Kill is darkly atmospheric thanks to some excellent gothic production design and rich with inventive camera and editing techniques. It is often cited that Bava is one of the most under-rated directors to have ever worked in cinema, and Kill Baby Kill supports said argument. Whether it’s the slow-motion bouncing ball sequence, or the scene involving the amazing spiral staircase shot, or simply the director’s sensational (if somewhat irrational) use of colored light, Bava creates a world into which one is easily immersed despite the usually horrific dub job that plagues many of these re-issued releases. If possible, try to get a subtitled, overseas copy .
