PURCHASE THE DVD: Kindred: The Embraced (1996)

This short-lived FOX series tried to marry soap opera with the supernatural, much in the same way Dark Shadows before it did. However, it met with the same results and was cancelled after only a handful of episodes aired. Based on a role playing game, Kindred followed several vampire clans vying for power in San Fransisco. Looking at the credits, you'd think it was a vehicle for C Thomas Howell, who plays a cop who's onto the vamps, but after the first couple of episodes he seemed phased out and the series centered on the Prince of the City, Julian Luna, played by Mark Frankel.

The show was chessy when it started, but the quality began to pick up, so the show might have been cancelled before it's time. Rumor was that Showtime was considering picking it up after FOX canned it, but series lead Frankel was killed several months later in a motor cycle accident, snuffing any hopes of a revival, though it would have been interesting to see what Showtime would have done with babes like Brigid Brannaugh and Stacy Haiduk.
