PURCHASE THE DVD: King Kong (1933) (1933)
The reason this flick gets five stars is not because of the acting, which may have been fine for the time but seems terribly dated now, or the story, which is weak and borderline racist, but because of the groundbreaking special effects. The men working on Kong>/b>, most notably Willis O'Brien and Murray Spivak, invented special effects that were used right up to the CGI age of movie making. Without O'Brien's groundbreaking stopmotion animation there would have been no Ray Harryhousen or maybe even Star Wars. The Special Edition DVD is espeically facinating because of a missing scene from the movie which Peter Jackson and his crew painstakingly re-created using 1930's techniques. The original King Kong is an essential piece of movie making history.
