Featured Actress: Madonna - Shockingly, this 1991 documentary following Madonna on her “Blonde Ambition” tour is no longer available in the United States, a real shame for fans both of Madonna and pop music in general. Hyper-kinetic, rousing, frustrating and ultimately uplifting, Alek Keshishian’s roaming camera offers viewers a genuine fly-on-the-wall experience with one of the world’s most intriguing women. While the music performances, shot in gorgeous color 35mm film, are a wonder to behold, the movie really hits its stride in the grainy, black-and-white 16mm footage of the Might Miss M off-stage. Brash, arrogant, sensitive, and erratic, it’s not often a celebrity makes this kind of allowance to her public, and we are rewarded with a seemingly honest portrait of a woman who, despite being driven in so many directions, tries to never forget to keep love at the center of who she is. Does she always succeed? No? And that’s the most endearing and human part of both Madonna and her movie.
