Wesley Snipes plays a veteran Homicide Detective who is called upon to investigate a very unique crime scene: The White House. Teamed up with a good-natured (and rather hot) secret service agent played by Diane Lane, Snipes’s snooping uncovers an intrigue that could bring the very foundations of the current Presidential Administration to the ground.
While this is a well-written, exciting and entertaining movie, it’s not one that makes too many people’s favorites lists despite the factr it has so much working for it. Despite an admittedly phantasmagoric plotline and some reliance on semi-preposterous White House mythology, the action moves quickly, the pieces add up and a stellar cast makes the whole scenario palatable. Murder at 1600 is one of those movies you walk out of and say to a friend, “Hey, I really liked that,” only to, a week later, forget you’d even seen it. That’s a shame, since it is damn fine entertainment and features expert performances from the likes of Snipes, Lane, Dennis Miller, Ronny Cox, and Alan Alda. But most memorable for many will be Mary Moore’s turn as the murder victim who, before she dies, spends quite a memorable evening in the oval office.
