PURCHASE THE DVD: Noise (2004)

Noise tries to be an off-beat and original New York City movie. Filled with quirky characters doing quirky things, all of it set against a shockingly thin story, it falls apart mostly due to unseasoned acting and, at times, some pretty giant leaps of logic. The plot revolves around an alcoholic divorcee (played by Victoria Secret model and fashion magazine covergirl Trish Goff in her debut acting role) trying to pull her life together by getting herself set up in the big, big city with a new job and a new apartment. But this supposedly restful change of life is altered by the insanely loud antics of her crazy upstairs neighbor (an over-the-top Alley Sheedy, who leaves no piece of scenery un-chewed).

The movie is supposedly trying to indicate that somehow Goff’s character brings all of this upon herself, and that this is a ritual of sorts she must undergo to become her own person. Instead, it’s an odd assemblage of weird, irrational events strung together by scenes of Goff sporting a heroin-chic look while being slowly driven mad by Sheedy’s incessant loud-music-playing and banging. If it sounds like a bad idea for a movie, it is.
