PURCHASE THE DVD: Project Vampire (1993)

An ultra-low budget, shot on video sci-fi take on vampirism, Project Vampire succeeds where so many of its brethren fail due to some imaginative ideas and decent direction. The plot revolves around a mad scientist who happens to be a vampire that has developed an anti-aging serum. If his plans go well, he’ll be able to get the rest of the world hooked on the serum, creating a legion of vampires all loyal to him. Alas, three scientists are out to stop the good doctor? Can they possibly succeed?

While sometimes severely hampered by listless, amateurish performances and some pretty goofy antagonists that service the evil doctor (it IS hard to find good help, isn’t it?), Project Vampire isn’t a complete time waster thanks to the fundamentals: an imaginative script and competent direction and pacing. If you’re not used to no budget video productions, however, you may want to sit this one out. And if you find yourself not digging this picture, do be sure to keep your eyes peeled for lovely ladies Connie Singer and Daryl Shannon who generously provide a little skin to keep things interesting.
