PURCHASE THE DVD: Shallow Ground (2004)

Often very creepy and filled with decent jump-scares, from start to finish, Shallow Ground is, for the most part, an eerie, chilling and compelling horror movie with a solid mystery at its center. Timothy V. Murphy plays a guilt-ridden, small town Sheriff haunted by a murder he couldn’t stop. But this is no ordinary small town, it’s one being abandoned thanks to a new dam being constructed, and the Sheriff and his deputies seem ready to move on: that is until a young boy walks into the Sheriff’s station covered in blood. Now they must uncover the mystery behind the boy’s appearance (and subsequent disappearance), a puzzle that will lead them all back to various unsolved murders that have plagued the area – as well as some past indiscretions of their own.

While the majority of the movie works and even excels in the areas of horror and gore, the resolution seems a tad far-fetched and various aspects of the killer’s methodology doesn’t always make sense. Viewers will want to pay very close attention to keep up with various plot twists, and most will be satisfied and perhaps pleasantly surprised by one Hell of a mean-spirited last-second twist ending!
