Nude Celebs: Lynn Odell - Early 80’s computer fascination mixes with 60’s psychedelia and 70’s political paranoia in this enigmatic thriller about a man who comes to terms with his vengeance-motivated crimes while acting as a test-subject in an experiment to regenerate the bodies of two ailing, elder war veterans. Got that? No? Well, neither will most anyone else! Like the most obtuse work by David Lynch, The Passing knows its agenda and doesn’t mind if you can’t follow it closely. Important here is that a few key ideas leak out – specifically a mistrust of government-sponsored medical research and its relationship to capital punishment – and that the viewer walk away with a particular, intended feeling. A grimy low-budget, shot-on-8mm feel is pervasive throughout, so the end result is a confusing haze of dirty, disturbing images. The intentions are commendable, even if the execution can be trying.
Perhaps most notable about the movie is that it marked the acting debut of actress Lynn Odell, former punk rock singer for the all-girl New York City band Cheap Perfume! The movie can be found on the now out-of-print Brentwood Collections “Ancient Evil” and “Blood Thirst.”
