Featured Actress: Hailey Smith - It’s a shame that director Mary Lambert’s career hasn’t hit more high notes. As a horror movie helmer, she started off with an excellent adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Semetary that stayed fairly true to the book up until its very last, unfortunate moment. Alas, something went terribly wrong after Pet Semetary, (some would say Pet Semetary II was the start of it all…) and before you knew it, Lambert was doing awful TV movies like My Stepson, My Lover. Sure, many wouldn’t expect much of the gal who did many of Madonna’s earliest videos, but Pet Semetary certainly showed that she had a knack for scaring the bejesus out of audiences.

Fast forward to 2005 and the direct-to-video release of Urban Legends: Bloody Mary, the third release in the semi-successful Urban Legend/s franchise. Not many give these movies much though – they are essentially clones of Kevin Williamson’s horror hits featuring an attractive but forgettable cast who are violently done away via sometimes clever/sometimes stupid means. Here, however, Lambert notches up the suspense and chills when three high school girls giggle their way through the “Bloody Mary” incantation and then start seeing the effects of this supposedly fictional curse. Is it “Bloody Mary,” the ghost of a girl who was murdered by her jock boyfriend, or is someone using the curse for his or her own psychopathic tendencies?
