PURCHASE THE DVD: Whispers In The Dark (1992)

A solid cast is wasted in this tepid erotic thriller that stars Annabella Sciorra as a psychiatrist who can’t seem to shake the dark sexual exploits of one of her patients, (voluptuous Deborah Unger). Her shrink, played by Alan Alda, tries to help her work our her own kinks, but the appearance of a new love interest (Jamie Sheridan) may be all the healing she needed – that is until it’s revealed her new beau is connected to her patient. When her patient turns up dead, flatfoot Anthony LaPaglia tries to piece together Sciorra’s involvement, but will he figure it all out too late?

After seeing Whispers in the Dark, no one will be surprised to learn that 98% of writer-director Christopher Crowe’s output has been for television. The movie suffers from a plodding movie-of-the-week feel, never building much suspense or creating sympathy for its cardboard characters. While a last minute revelation at the end is indeed a surprise, it unfolds as one of the most out-of-left-field twists ever committed to celluloid and elicits more laughs than it does shocks.
