Featured Actress: Chandra West - Veteran British television director Geoffrey Sax makes his big-screen directorial debut with this stunted thriller about an architect (Michael Keaton) who becomes obsessed with static on television and radios, believing his deceased wife (Chandra West) is attempting to contact with him among the white noise.
An excellent and captivating first half of the movie is ruined by an implausible second half that has Michael Keaton becoming an M. Night Shymalan-type of superhero who can hear the voices and see the faces of the soon-to-be-dead in his televisions’ static. What is at first an emotional and riveting exploration of a reportedly real-life phenomenon gets dumber and dumber as the movie progresses, thus harming the chances of EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) ever receiving an kind of legitimate attention.
Alas, if you like a good ghost story or are a fan of the Japanese “curse genre,” chances are you’ll enjoy White Noise as it is. Some truly excellent cinematography and a decent acting role from the rarely seen Michael Keaton definitely lend this one more credibility as well.
