Nude Celebs: Kate Bosworth - In an emotionally demanding performance, Val Kilmer excels as John Holmes, the ex-porn star that was caught up in a swirl of drugs, murder and madness back in the summer of 1981. Wonderland is the short name for a drug den/hideout that could be found on Wonderland Avenue in Los Angeles back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. After a horribly violent, vengeance motivated massacre occurs at Wonderland, only two men have lived and only two stories exist: John Holmes and Billy Deverell. Wisely, the filmmakers offer both conflicting narratives, creating a central mystery based on a simple notion: what is the truth?
Hyper direction, fast editing and canted angle choices make this movie feel as acid-based and free-wheeling as its characters. But excellent casting and a sharp screenplay are what really make Wonderland a memorable viewing experience. As usual, Kilmer’s intensity is perfectly matched to the subject matter, and here he must blend pathos with charisma, to ultimately make a loser worth liking. Also terrific is Tim Blake Nelson as Deverell and Kate Bosworth as Holmes’s tragic girlfriend Dawn Schiller. And do be sure to keep an eye out for some nearly unrecognizable turns by Dylan McDermott and Christina Applegate.
