In David Cronenberg's second film Rabid, Marilyn Chambers plays Rose, a drifter that undergoes an experimental skin graft after a terrible motorcycle accident. Strangely, after the surgery she becomes a kind of sexual-vampire with a strange phallus that sprouts from her underarm and demands regular infusions of fresh blood. What's worse, post attack, Rose's victims display murderous, psychotic behavior.
Similar to Cronenberg's first movie Shivers in look and feel (it was largely put together by the same crew, including Producer Ivan Reitman), Rabid is much larger in scale. Through it will probably be best remembered as one of Marilyn Chambers's only "legitimate roles," the movie is eerie, weird and definitely worthy of a look beyond the fact that you get to see Chambers doing some non-hardcore nudity.
Indeed, Chambers here is terrific too - a solid actress that it's a pity didn't get to do more work such as this. One thing is for sure, her Ivory Snow innocence works well in the picture to lure victims - just as it did to lure her legions of fans during her impossibly huge hardcore career.
